Is a power steering pump something that can be generic? There are a ton of no-name brands on eBay, and since I’m selling my 530i, I’m curious whether my leaky power steering pump (or in fact any leaky power steering pump) can be replaced by this or a similar generic part.

I would think that if the inlet and outlet are in the same location and you have a correct bracket to bolt it on it should in theory work. I’m not 100% sure because all the cars(GM) I work on use the same pump and GM used the same pump* on pretty much everything

*only a couple oddities

It’ll fit, but with a crucial part like a power steering pump I’d only trust an OEM replacement, especially on that car.

A friend of my friend had some random Skoda. He was planning to fix some small issues but the car completely broke down. So he sold it away but gave the unused spare parts to my friend. He gave me a power steering pump as my Trailblazer (4.2l) engine came without one. I thought that I could make some adapter and use the Skoda pump in my engine.

But a bit surprisingly an adapter was unnecessary as the pump fit nearly perfectly to the three bolt mounting that the Trailblazer engine had. So I guess power steering pumps are quite well standardized.

I’m pretty sure that the BMW pump also shares the same bolt pattern.
